Shibori Workshop

Instructor: Katrin Reifeiss

$25 | RSVP Required

21 Jun. 2025 | 4-7pm | RSVP

This Japanese Shibori workshop is a hands-on exploration of this traditional dyeing art. Participants will learn a variety of Shibori techniques such as Itajime (folding-and-clamping), binding, and pole-wrapping. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with different methods and leave with their own unique hand-dyed pieces. Most importantly, they’ll experience the joy and appreciation for the art of Shibori and the creative possibilities it offers.

Participants should bring items from home to dye—anything 100% white cotton, linen, hemp, silk, or a blend of these fibers. Ideas of items to bring include tea towels, clothing, pillowcases, scarves, tablecloths, etc. Please do not bring anything too large, like a duvet cover, as the dye pot will not be large enough to dye an item that size. Older or stained items are also welcome, as the dye can give them new life! Whether new or old, all items must be pre-washed before the workshop.

About Katrin Reifeiss
Katrin Reifeiss (Kat) studied at Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. After graduating, she moved to NYC, working in fashion and later in press relations. She never gave up painting and was part of s.u.n.Arts, organizing shows for underrepresented artists from 1999 to 2002. Since 2008, she has combined her love of painting and fashion by creating and dyeing fabric, specializing in Japanese Shibori for her self-named line, Katrin Reifeiss. Kat has taught Shibori at the Textile Arts Center and Japan Society in NYC. Since 2016 she has been a Teaching Artist at Garrison Art Center and has held workshops at private residencies in the Hudson Valley.

La MaMa Kids

My Handy Ancestors Art Workshop

Free Drop In Program

28 Jun. 2025 | 1-4pm

Who is your first finger? Who is your pinky? Students will participate in making a pair of ancestor gloves with white cotton gloves, their imagination, paper, markers, glue, and scissors to celebrate their hands. They will think of each finger as an ancestor/character here to assist them in the world and share with the group if they wish. Gloves will be displayed and must be used in a ritual ceremony at the end of Maria’s performance in order to take home. Maria will provide examples to expand the possibilities. This workshop is to imagine the body as a sacred supportive vessel that supports us instead of just a meat sack to do work.

All materials provided.

This class is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Energy Hygiene Puppet Painting Workshop

$10 | RSVP Required

13 Jul. 2025 | 1-3pm

Join Maria as we practice energy hygiene techniques to connect to the different sensations/emotions/pains trapped in our body followed by using our imagination to clean it out. Participants will then paint provided mini Aricamian puppet statues with how they imagined cleaning out their body. Painted puppets will be used in Maria’s final performance.

Since 2020, Maria became a certified Introspective Hypnosis Practitioner alongside her artistic practice to release heavy energies from the body. She has learned how past experiences can get stuck in our body and using the imagination daily to release these energies is beneficial before unresolved feelings become physical ailments or disease. She will teach techniques she uses in hypnosis and is excited to share this with the public.
